During their time at sea, many sailors were given rum or other mixed alcoholic beverages as part of their rations. In times of high-stress, uncertainty, or surviving a notable incident, Captains would frequently offer an extra ration of alcohol to their crew in order to boost morale & inspire camaraderie & loyalty. The catch was, the alcohol given out for the free ration came from re-used casks that previously stored other liquids. The distinctly new tastes & potency that derived from mixed casks became a symbol of pride & tough love that helped Captains & crews bond during times at sea.
